Gerald Hodges/the Racing Reporter

There are dozens of NASCAR reporters and columnists, with more on the way, but since 1993, Gerald Hodges a.k.a.; The Racing Reporter has been at the forefront on reporting the latest NASCAR news from the pits, teams, and tracks.

Hodges traveled to Japan for all three NASCAR races held in that country (1996-1998). In 1996, the internet was not nearly what it is today, and all stories and columns were sent back to the Untied States via faxes.

Before the internet explosion, Hodges’ or his office sent out all racing stories from the track, or from his office in Mobile, Alabama, via fax. As an added feature, a stack of about 25 printed driver photos were sent out to all his papers at the beginning of each month. If a driver won Sunday’s race, or was featured, the newspaper would have a file photograph they could use.

The internet and digital photography brought a big change during the 1999 season. The simple technology changed and the internet became the medium of the advertising industry. On-line computers, both at the track and in offices link customers around the world, and provide news options unheard of even a few years ago.

No longer do fax machines come into play. They have been replaced with lightning-fast laptop computers, that are fed high quality digital images from the latest Nikon cameras. Within minutes after a photo is taken at the track, or during a race, it can be sent out worldwide.

Hodges News Services used the emerging communication technology to expand and change the way they send out racing stories. In many cases, they learned as they went along. But now, any newspaper can have the very best, latest and affordable NASCAR racing coverage in the business.

Gerald Hodges/the Racing Reporter sends out NASCAR stories almost every day. In addition to his writing, he is also a professional photographer, having over 100,000 NASCAR images in his files. He is also a photography and photojournalism instructor at the University of South Alabama.

Currently, over 125 newspapers, from small weeklies, to large giants like the Hearst Newspapers carry his stories and columns.

Some columns cost as little as $12 each.
